Chapter 5: We Come to this World with Nothing
June went to revisit where she began to rekindle her faith: the orchard. It was a pleasant day with a slight overcast. She moaned and groaned before God like a toddler who hasn’t been to grandma’s house in over a year. Tears streamed down her face.
“Lord, you have taken so many people out of my life. Who else will you take?” Stacy’s and Helen’s faces began to take root in her mind and the tears came down much faster this time.
Quoting Job 1:21, “I know, Lord, naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, may the name of the Lord be praised.” (NIV).
June used to memorize Scripture when she took a Bible class in college. A year after that class she became engrossed in the Bible. However, she lost some faith but the Word still stuck with her.
“Lord,” she pleaded with Him. “I know your Word says, I come with nothing and I will leave with nothing, so, tell me, but why should I praise You for that?” June started to find herself getting a little angry. “Your Word also says that You gave and take away, so why should I praise You for that?”
She heard nothing but she continued to press forward.
“Lord, I long to see Helen and Stacy tonight in my dreams. Show me that they are ok. May they speak to me tonight.”
June was mourning like never before. She was only leaving the house for work. Morgan came over a few times to bring food and to support her. But after a few weeks of sitting in the cold, lonely house she decided some fresh air and errands would do her good to get things off her mind.
June went to get her car inspected. While in the waiting room she saw a familiar face, it was Jimmy, the guy from the seafood market at the grocery store.
He noticed her first.
“Hey, you look familiar. It looks like you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.”
June was surprised. Jimmy was a smooth talker but apparently, candid as well.
“Well, you look a little shabby yourself today,” she quipped. He scanned his rough beard and over-the-top ripped jeans.
Jimmy was caught off guard but then noticed June’s warm smile and was put at ease again.
“Life throws you curveballs one after the other,” June added.
“Yeah, tell me about it. It leaves you like a dry bone.”
They smiled at each other.
“Car is ready for June Harrison!”
June heard the announcement over the loud speaker.
“Well, I have to go, Jimmy, maybe I’ll see you around, hopefully, more cleaned up at the seafood market.”
She winked at him.
Jimmy slightly blushed and June went to check on her car.
Let me know what you think and stay tuned for more! 🙂
